Day 39 - Stoke Fleming to Brixham - 15.55m / 6:48

A wet one! It’s being saying all week that Friday will be a bad day. But, as always, you have to wait until the day to see what is really happening. Sure enough - it is chucking it down and the forecast says it will do so until 4pm! We say farewell to our other companions and the four of us contemplate the 15 miles in the rain... off we go!

No pictures as we struggle out of Stoke Fleming, onto the cliffs and around into the Dartmouth estuary. It is just too wet and we have our heads down tucked into our waterproofs... this is the beginning of the estuary...

This is Dartmouth Castle which was built in 1388. I am sure it looks better from the other side of the estuary today!

Sheltered from the wind from the cliffs, we head into Dartmouth which seems like a really nice place - a bit like Salcombe!

The light makes everything look so beautiful...

But we are really wet! Harry is asking “are we having fun yet?!”

Looks like it is brightening up our at sea - better get out there!

But not before some tea and cake - and some sarnies for the pack...

We head for the lower ferry - instead of a chain or a motor on the ferry itself, they use a tug which is pretty skillfully driven to push it over...

Alan is doing his best “on the waterfront” impression...

After the ferry, we climb quickly out of the estuary. The rain has stopped and the light is amazing.

We are constantly taking in the views...

Where we walked this morning looks totally different now the rain has stopped...

And looking back to the estuary is stunning...

The terrain starts to change as we reach Froward Point

And the sun is struggling to get through...

This is the former Brownstone Camp.

This is where the gun was that had a range of 14miles.

The weather is weird and it feels like we can get at any moment. There is some very tough, up and down, south coast path walking now!

These dudes are taking it on their stride...

And the scenery delivers as a reward for the effort...

Some of the gradients are getting interesting...

Next time you use plastic for anything, consider this picture maybe? The range of products is pretty diverse!

We climb high...

And we walk low... and the beaches are deserted and beautiful.

The terrain is tough going and even Harry is wondering when we’ll hit the top of the hill!

But for every climb there is an reward...

We find some random things on the path...

But eventually, and after a lot of strenuous up and down, we arrive at Berry Head and the beginning of the English Riviera.

And we round the head and into Brixham which looks very nice...

And active fishing village, it is quite nice to see so many boats.

Time to say goodbye to these dudes who have put in a major shift today to get here!

And check in to our interesting, but very friendly accomodation.
