Day 38 (Day 4, 2nd leg) - Salcombe to Stoke Fleming - 19.11m / 7:24

A great night. Very tempting to stay in Salcombe and take advantage of this offer... I am the one on the left.

But instead we get up and, after a good breakfast, set off.

Salcombe is looking amazing this morning as we come down the hill.

After a bit of mucking around we find the ferry.

The sun is really coming through already and it is only 9am.

Someone has to gaffer the their shoes to keep them falling apart.

Salcome also looks great from the water.

And the beach is fantastic as we leave the ferry.

The walk out to the estuary is spectacular and a promise of the great things to come today.

We have a long way to go...

But it is turning into one of the best days on the path...

Harry is loving it too.

And so are these dudes...

Pretty windy at Prawle Point...

The coast is delivering in droves today...

I think I might have found my new favourite place in the world - for today...

At Start Point, we are reminded how far we have come and how far we have to go.

This is my attempt at some nature photography...

We reach Hallsands which was finally washed into the sea in 1917 after being expoited by a mining company...

Looks pretty calm today

We arrive in Beesands which is the start of the Slapton Sands...

Here, pausing for a quick prawn sandwich, we are joined by two new friends...

This cafe is supposed to be amazing but we didn’t have time to try it!

Slapton Sands was recognised as a beach similar to Normandy in the war...

As a result there was a practice here which literally backfired badly... German U-boats sunk some of the fleet and others were killed in “friendly fire” as Eisenhower ordered them to use live ammo.

This tank commemorates the loss of around 900 men. The only reason the story is known today is because of one local who made it his mission to expose what really happened here.

At the end of Slapton Sands there is a great tea cafe just before...

But we didn’t see any... probably a good thing!

Ordinance remains left over from the Normandy trials.

One last big ascent and climb before the homeward straight...

Blackpool Sands is a fantastic last beach for today...

The path is really putting on a show on the greenery here....

We arrive at our hotel at Stoke Fleming. A long day but so amazing.

Into the pub to have a beer or two and watch the game.
