Day 37 (Day 3, 2nd leg) - Bantham to Salcombe - 13.5m / 4:48

What a spectacular day on the path! Took far too many pictures so you will have to indulge me just a little - I hope it is as enjoyable for you as it was for me taking them!

This morning, in stark contrast to yesterday, the sun was out and the sky was blue. The Avon estuary looked stunning at low tide on our early morning stroll.

After breakfast we set off. No ferries or crossings to worry about today so it meant we could take it at our own pace a bit more. Looking back to Burgh island and our walk yesterday was fantastic. We could even see the cliffs we came across yesterday but were unable to see at the time!

Immediately the South Hams coast delivers.

The view of some of our target is in sight - Bolt Tail which is about half way today.

Our cliffs are at Thurlestone where you navigate the golf course. A great job has been done to keep this looking amazing whilst accommodating the golf.

We also get our first beach here at Thurlestone Sands.

Time for a play on the beach with a ball.

At South Milton Sands there is a scruffy cafe which apparently serves pricey but great food. But we had just had brekky so pushed on.

Its’ views over the sea are fantastic.

Next to Hope Cove which consists of Inner Hope and Outer Hope (but not shake-it-all-about Hope).

This is a picture postcard village but was the place of lots of shipwrecks because of the rugged coast so is very popular with divers.

We have already covered some distance today.

Despite the forecast, the sea decides it is time to chuck us a shower so we take our first drenching.

But dry out soon enough when the sun comes back out. Pausing to take in this stunning view, and the direction of the path.

Shortly afterwards, we get our second soaking on the hill tops.

Harry is digging the views today too.

The views back inland aren’t shabby either.

Luckily the sun is out as we reach Bolt Head where we go for a look at the point.

And Harry does his mountain goat impression...

Here we decide to divert inland to East Sour Farm where they have a really cool honesty cafe on a kids activity centre with delicious cake and a nice cup-of-tea. We are the only ones there.

Eventually, we head back to the simply stunning Starehole Bay, which is my new favourite place in the whole world (until I find another one on the path tomorrow)

And we round the corner to get our first glimpse of Salcombe.

The path is lush and green here. It shelters us from the cold wind and it feels very much like spring rather than winter, as it did yesterday.

Pausing once agin for a cuppa and a sunbathe at the Winking Prawn in South Sands...

And taking in the view of the beaches on the other side of The Bar, where we will walk tomorrow...

We end up in pretty Salcombe. Which feels a bit like Brighton and Chelsea put together, but smaller and more Devon.

We climb the hill to our, very nice, B&B and wait for our friends to arrive from London for dinner.
