Short day today after our long one yesterday to enable us to go home at lunchtime. We did 48 miles this week which takes us to 320 total and two weeks to go.
The rain has stopped and the wind has died and promises to be a great day. We get a taxi from our B&B in Marazion to Porthleven for an early start. It feels pretty autumnal but it isn’t cold.
Porthleven is my new favourite place. There are a lot of holiday cottages and it is very pretty.
We get straight onto Porthleven Sands. It is a big beach but apparently very treacherous and swimming is actively discouraged. The guide book even tells you not to walk near the sea in rough weather... looks pretty nice today though.
On the right here is the Loe - Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake. Apparently, it was the estuary to the river cover but was dammed by the “Loe Bar” which is the natural shingle bar between it and the sea. It is also the lake that Sir Bedivere cast Excalibur into as King Arthur lay dying.
The beach is derserted and we have great views of where we walked yesterday back into Penzance and round to Mousehole which was impossible in the mist and drizzle.
The sun is burning of the cloud now.
This monument on the cliffs at Poldhu commemorates the radio station here that transmitted the first Morse signal across the Atlantic in 1901 which was received in Newfoundland. The moss makes it look like some weird bat-signal from Gotham...
We come onto Pollurian Bay
And decide to have a play with the ball on the beach with the other dogs...
But then discover these - Portuguese Man-of-War jellyfish, all over the beach. They look very alien with their purple and blue sacks. They are not one organism but live as several linked together. We beat a hasty retreat...
And arrive at Mullion Cove, our destination for today.
It is a spectacular day and difficult for us to leave the path but we will be back here on Monday morning for new adventures.
