Day 4 - Combe Martin to Woolacombe - 15 miles / 6 hours

Still feeling the aches and pains from yesterday which really took its toll. Fortunately, the first part of today was "moderate". But coastal walking is all about the uppy / downy thing so nothing to complain about. All I can say is thank heaven for Compeed...

More death by scenic pictures on their way - I hope you are enjoying them - I know some of you are! Thanks for the messages!

Nice breakfast (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs) at the Acorns B&B in Combe Martin. A town that is dying after the summer - the pub I ate in last night closes at the end of September until April! I am going for pub grub now as anything resembling "fine dining" is truly terrible... great curry though :-D

The views back over Little Hangman start immediately and we are on our way.

Onto Watermouth - quiet now but in world war 2 they trialled laying pipes to fuel the allies by runnng them from here to Swansea across the Bristol Channel. It was successful and so they did it to France. Very pretty small harbour and we had our first spell of rain of the day here.

Another day of walking?? Delicious...

Onto Ilfracombe via Widmouth Head and familiar territory...

We say goodbye to Great and Little Hangman.

Into Ifracombe which is a big touristy seaside Resort.

Nice play on the beach while the tide is out

Big ascent and onto Ilfracombe proper

This lady is called Verity and is on loan from Damian Hirst - pretty impressive, massive too.

If your interested... extreme gratuitous close-up :-)

What's going on with those boats then?

My first Cornish pasty - should have waited until Cornwall!

Getting out of Ilfracombe and it all turns spectacular again as we make our way to Lee. Just gonna post a few pics here as they should tell the story... very tough terain again...

Do they mean to my feet? ;-)

The lighthouse at Bull Point...

The rock formations are incredible.

And so we reach Mortepoint just before Woolacombe. Just to give you context, that is here:

(The left pointy thing).

This is on the approach and the wind, which was blowing the rain, was on the other side of the point... so relatively calm at this point...

So we went round the bend and to say "it was blowing a hoolie" was a complete understatement. Every warning sign in my body was going off! But managed to make it to the actual point... but not around it on the path!

And to prove it...

But not afraid to say I bottled it to get on my hands and knees and go on around the point and find the other side of the path... another day perhaps :-)

So we make our way into Woolacombe

It is fantastic...

And our first surfing beach...

Woolacombe is a friendly surfers place so immediately, Harry makes a friend... I think she had her eye on his ball...

Before she can ask him back to her place, we make a sharp exit to collapse in a heap for an hour before heading out for a pint

Good night.
