This day was as strenuous as the guidebooks said it would be and as relentless. But highly rewarding and amazing environment.
Lots of rain overnight and early morning which had cleared by the time we went for our morning stroll.
Ate, probably the weirdest omelette I ever had at The Bottom Ship (evening meal and packed lunch were great).
Set-off for Lynmouth into amazing greenery
And onto Worthy Toll. Surely the most ornate Toll gate in Britain?
These tunnels were once part of Ashley Combe, which has "gorgeous" gardens and belonged to "the only legitimate child of Lord Byron" Ada Byron - not sure how well that went down in the pub 😀. Anyway, apparently she had these tunnels made so that "Ada and others could view the ornate gardens without being interrupted by the coming and goings of commoners." I have definitely met a few like her...
Moving on, swiftly then, to the 5 miles of woodland walking. This is dominated by some serious elevation.
And then shortly we reach Culbone Church which is in the Guinness Book of Records as "the Worlds Smallest Complete Parish Church". It seats 30 and parts of it are over 1000 years old. I have to say it reminded me of the church out of Live and Let Die but that will probably upset some people.
Then on through the relentless woodland to the choice of path - we chose rugged again. Why else are we here?
Great views punctuating the path...
It is highly taxing and we have a constant sweat on! Not sure I could run it much faster!
Think someone is enjoying himself
And then, finally, we emerge from the woodland and into the views again
And so we leave the small part of Somerset that we will see on the SWCP...
Welcome to Devon...
And now onto the lighthouse - the most Northerly point in Devon - and we have only been here 5 minutes!
Err the path is a bit steep from here and all on scree...
Pretty challenging stuff... and the comes the cloud and the rain...
Our first soaking... and where the hell is the path? And the sea?
Spooky...
We are soaked!
And onto Lynmouth...
